To understand and predict the physical, chemical, and biological processes at play in coastal and nearshore marine areas requires an integrated, interdisciplinary approach. The case study of the French structuration of coastal ocean and nearshore observing systems provides an original overview on a federative research infrastructure named ILICO. It is a notable example of national structuration and pan-institution efforts to investigate the forefront of knowledge on the processes at work within the critical coastal zone. ILICO comprises, in a pluridisciplinary approach, eight distributed network-systems of observation and data analysis that are accredited and financially supported by French research institutions and the French Ministry for Higher...

The general objective of EXOCET/D is to develop, implement and test specific instruments aimed at exploring, describing, quantifying and monitoring biodiversity in deep-sea fragmented habitats as well as at identifying links between community structure and environmental dynamics. Onboard experimental devices will complement the approach, enabling experiments on species physiology. The EXOCET/D working fields include: video and acoustic imagery, in situ analysis of physico-chemical factors, quantitative sampling of macroand micro-organisms, in vivo experiments, integration of multidisciplinary data, implementation on European deep-submersibles and a final phase of technical and scientific validation

Impact of environmental factors on in situ determination of iron in seawater by flow injection analysis ArchiMer
Laes, Agathe; Vuillemin, Renaud; Leilde, Bernard; Sarthou, Géraldine; Bournot Marec, Claudie; Blain, Stéphane.
A sensitive method for iron determination in seawater has been adapted on a submersible chemical analyser for in situ measurements. The technique is based on flow injection analysis (FIA) coupled with spectrophotometric detection. When direct injection of seawater was used, the detection limit was 1.6 nM, and the precision 7%, for a triplicate injection of a 4 nM standard. At low iron concentrations, on line preconcentration using a column filled with 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) resin was used. The detection limit was 0.15 nM (time of preconcentration = 240 s), and the precision 6%, for a triplicate determination of a I nM standard, allowing the determination of Fe in most of the oceanic regimes, except the most depleted surface waters. The effect of...

COAST-HF (Coastal OceAn observing SysTem – High Frequency) is a French national observation network of the physical and biogeochemical dynamics of the coastal ocean, at high frequency. COAST-HF aims at understanding and analysing changes of contrasted coastal ecosystems at different temporal scales from extreme or intermittent high frequency (hour, day) events to multi-year trends. Since several years (from 2000 for the longest time series in Bay of Brest), the network extends along the English Channel, Atlantic and Mediterranean French coasts through 14 fixed platforms instrumented for the in situ high-frequency (≤ 1h) observations. Several French research institutes (IFREMER, CNRS, Marine Universities) are operating these systems. The organization of...

New instruments to monitor coastal sea water masses according to European Water Framework Directive, Trophimatique project ArchiMer
Repecaud, Michel; Degres, Yves; Bernard, Nathalie; Allenou, Jean-pierre; Aoustin, Yannick; Arrondeau, Jean-pierre; Bouget, Jean-francois; Bucas, Karenn; Daniel, Anne; Guillaud, Jean-francois; Hamon, Michel; Jegou, Paul; Laes, Agathe; Le Roux, Dominique; Le Piver, David; Quemener, Loic; Rolin, Jean-francois; Rudelle, Tiphaine; Legrand, Jacques; Vuillemin, Renaud.
The automated monitoring of physico-chemical parameters in the coastal zone has been using large buoys and fixed infrastructures. A better understanding of many estuaries is needed in order to fulfil the agenda and requirements of the European Water Framework Directive. In order to address the fluxes of nutrients as well as algal blooms and low oxygen events, the "TROPHIMATIQUE" project has developed a new generation of instruments able to be deployed in sea waters. The smaller size of the new instruments is intended to facilitate the maintenance. A new multi-parameter probe has been developed. The measurements of all nutrients are performed thanks to the CHEMINI flow injection analysers for nitrate, ammonia, silicate and phosphate. A sampler using similar...

TEMPO: a new ecological module for studying deep-sea community dynamics at hydrothermal vents ArchiMer
Sarrazin, Jozee; Blandin, Jerome; Delauney, Laurent; Dentrecolas, Stephane; Dorval, Philippe; Dupont, Jacky; Legrand, Julien; Leroux, D.; Leon, Pierre; Leveque, Jean-jacques; Rodier, Philippe; Vuillemin, Renaud; Sarradin, Pierre-marie.
The major goal of this project, elaborated in the frame of the STREP Exocet/D European project, was to design a first autonomous long-term imaging module equipped with a deep-sea video camera, adequate lightning and sufficient energy storage while taking advantage of most recent progress in imaging and photonics. The new ecological module TEMPO was tested and deployed during the Momareto cruise held from August 6 to September 6, 2006 on the new French oceanographic vessel Pourquoi pas?, with the ROV Victor 6000. The scientific objectives of the Momareto cruise were to study the spatial and temporal dynamics of hydrothermal communities colonizing the MoMAR zone, located on the Azores Triple Junction.
